Drumming Lessons with Heart Song, Vaughan Harris

I am currently running 2 to 3 lessons per month, which are held on the first 3 Saturdays of the every month, long weekends permitting. They start at 9am and run for 4 hours until 1pm. The fee per lesson is R450. These monthly lessons are open to drummers of experience levels.

My lessons are held at the Bidon Bistro, a top restaurant in the shadow of the Zwartkop near Muldersdrift. The Bidon Bistro is situated near Beyers Naude Drive, between Muldersdrift and Lanseria. It is also accessible from Cedar Road and the N14 Krugersdorp Highway. The drumming area is away from the restaurant itself which affords us the privacy needed, and has both an indoor and outdoor space, allowing us to drum in all weather conditions.

The class held on the first Saturday of the month is called iNgududu, which is the Zulu name for the Southern Ground Hornbill, a bird that has the most rhythmic call. iNgududu includes students that have shown a level of dedication to their drumming and lessons. Their experience level ranges from 1 to 10 years and more. This class focusses on playing a variety of multi-part ensembles in a light, joy-filled music making environment.

The class that currently meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month is called Meraki and they started in February 2017. From 19 August 2017 a new beginner drumming group starts which is open to all beginner drummers and/or drummers that feel they need to solidify their djembe foundations. A new beginner class starts every 6 to 10 months depending on the development of each group.

Private Djembe Tuition

Even though I am not a strong proponent of private Djembe lessons, as the Djembe is a social drum that works best in a group format, there are on occasion people that require technical adjustment to their playing style. Private lessons are most beneficial for those that need their Djembe style tweaked and enhanced.

The cost of a private session is R500 per hour.

My lessons cover:

  • A variety of rhythms and multi-part ensembles
  • Rhythm exercises and activities
  • A sacred approach to the drum and drumming
  • Many hours of music and laughter
